THERE ARE LOTS OF EVENTS coming up in Sunol,
so get your calendars out and start marking! The first thing
you can do is participate in selecting the annual recipient
of the Vivienne Sheib Award. Several years ago an award was
established for the Sunol Glen School volunteer or employee
who has given "above and beyond the call of duty."
Vivienne, for whom the award is named, is a retired teacher
who always gave her all for the school. Still an active community
volunteer at 83, she has been serving as prompter for the Sunol
Repertory Theatre the past two seasons.
To nominate someone, please submit your choice, along with
your reasons, to the Sunol Glen office by Friday (5-23). You
can drop off your nomination or mail it to the school at 11601
Main Street, Sunol, CA 94586. The winner will be announced at
the Volunteer Tea on June 4, as well as in this column.
BOOKS FOR KIDS AND CLASSROOMS: Sunol Glen will be holding
its annual Scholastic Book Fair from this Thursday (5-22) through
Friday, May 30 in the library. Thursday, students will visit
the library to make wish lists, which will be sent home to parents
for their approval. Parents then send in a check or cash and
volunteers will fill the orders. There will also be a Classroom
Wish List posted in the library so you can make a purchase and
donate to the class libraries.
Book Fair hours are 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Thursday, and
8:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. from weekdays
from Friday through May 30. The Book Fair will also be open
for Sunol Glen's Open House on Wednesday, May 28, from 3 to
6:30 p.m.
HOPE ON THE WING: While you're checking out the Book
Fair during Open House, don't miss librarian Nancy Davis' special
project. Nancy organized the making of 1,000 origami cranes
as a gesture of hope during trying times. The cranes will be
hanging in the library for all to enjoy until the library closes
on May 30.
HELP NEEDED: Jim O'Laughlin, head of the Sunol Business
Guild's park committee, is looking for volunteers to help out
in the Sunol Station Gardens in downtown Sunol. There will be
a park workday on Saturday (5-24) from 9 a.m. to noon, so give
Jim a call at 925-862-2550 to let him know you're coming or
for more information.
MEMORIES, FOOD AND FUN: Save Our Sunol will hold its
annual Memorial Day Picnic and Ice Cream Social on Monday, May
26 from 1 to 4 p.m. on the Sunol Glen grounds. SOS will provide
barbecued chicken, burgers, hotdogs and ice cream, and Rosemary
Chang is bringing her fabulous homemade ice cream toppings.
Please bring a side dish, salad, beverage or treat to share.
Once again, our favorite songbird, Debra Knox, will be there
to fill the air with music. There will be a memorial service
at 1:30 p.m., followed by the picnic, kite flying and softball.
All are welcome!
SPRING FLING #1: Sunolians Fran and Lanny Replogle,
owners of Fenestra Winery, invite the public to their Spring
Fling and Whites Sale, May 24 to 26 from noon to 5 p.m. Winemaker
Lanny takes great pride in introducing Fenestra's four new releases
for tasting: 2002 Sauvignon Blanc, 2002 Semillon, 2001 Chardonnay,
all from Livermore Valley, and 2001 Chardonnay from Contra Costa
Co. As for the Whites Sale, every white wine will have a special
sale price for this weekend only. There is no charge for this
event.
SPRING FLING #2: The Sunol Glen Community Club invites
you to a very special evening at Little Valley Vineyard Bistro
on May 30 from 8 to 11 p.m. The Spring Fling will feature wine
tasting from Chouinard, Elliston, Fenestra and Little Valley
wineries, canapés, hot blues by Nightmare on Bourbon
Street, and an auction.
The event is a fundraiser for Sunol Glen's art, music and computer
programs, and the cost is $60 per couple or $35 per person.
The price is tax deductible and includes a commemorative wine
glass. Sandi Bohner and Bill Webster, Little Valley's owners,
are donating the event fee for the use of their lovely premises,
and Jeroen Engelberts and his band are donating their services.
Tickets are available at Little Valley, 11986 Main Street, Sunol,
or email Judy Bettencourt at judybettencourt@attbi.com.
Phew, I think that's it for May events, but June's right around
the corner, so stay tuned!
